Pui & Mel
I had a pile of washing that needed doing, so I bundled it up and headed out into the street to see if I could find a laundry nearby. I only needed to walk a few hundred metres before I found what I was looking for. I met a chatty, welcoming lady and was pleased to hand over my clothes. Laundry services are everywhere in Thailand, making them incredibly handy and affordable for travellers. The next day I returned to collect a neat, freshly washed bundle. I'd found my lady.
I had no idea at the time that this chance encounter would grow into a friendship that would bring such joy and give me a deeper insight into both our worlds.
Pui welcomed me right from the very start. She always had a story for me and a smile when I dropped in to see her. She allowed me into her life. We would laugh and chat together most days. She's still cheeky enough to call me 'Madam' and laughs every time she tells me that 'the whole street knows you, Madam.'
One evening before I flew home, I wanted to thank her properly. We'd talked about going out for Italian because it's her favourite food, so I walked up to her house to collect her. Our first restaurant was closed, so without hesitation I ordered a taxi and took her to Tann Beach Club instead. Like so many locals who spend their lives working, Pui hadn't been out in Phuket very much. She was excited to finally see what was behind the concrete wall she'd driven past countless times.
We ordered drinks and pizzas and sat beneath the palm trees overlooking the beach, chatting and laughing until our food arrived. Before we ate, I handed Pui a card I'd written for her in Thai. It made her cry. From the very first day we met, she has been beyond generous and kind to me, and it meant so much to be able to thank her in her own language.
I've never met a more determined and hardworking woman with such a huge heart and beautiful smile. When the pandemic brought Thailand's tourism industry to a standstill, Pui lost everything. Yet she refused to give up. Watching her rebuild her life, open a small bar, and work tirelessly to create a better future for herself and her son has been nothing short of inspiring. That evening, we didn't stay out late because she was heading home to do more laundry. Well, of course she was.
I truly believe it's the people you meet when you travel—especially when you travel solo—who leave the most lasting impression. Pui is one of those people. She reminds me that the greatest souvenirs we bring home aren't things we buy, but the friendships we make.
To think that a bag of washing could lead to such a wonderful friendship reminds me that sometimes the simplest moments lead to the most meaningful connections.
