Southern Tour - Draft Itinerary

Day 1 -  Welcome to Thailand! Unpack, explore and unwind

A private driver will meet you at Phuket International Airport. Just look for a smiling face with your name at arrivals.

Settle into your beautiful accommodation at the  Mandarava Resort & Spa. Feel free to unpack as this is your home for the next couple of days!

The friendly staff will escort you (and your bags) to your room in a songthaew – a small open-air vehicle with bench seats.

Explore- feel free to explore the local area. The beach is nearby (hotel shuttle available), shops and a mini-mart are within walking distance of the hotel. Bottled water is provided daily in your room, and any extras you might like are inexpensive and can be found at the local mini-mart just down the road. I’ll point you in the right direction.

If you grab a taxi back to the hotel, expect to pay around 200 baht.

In the evening if you're up for it, join us for casual drinks and Thai nibbles at the hotel bar. No pressure — it’s now your time to relax and unwind.

Day 2 - Let's get this show on the road...Phuket & surrounds

The Mandarava breakfast is a treat — tropical fruit, smoothies, pastries, omelettes, Thai options (including rice if you're adventurous), and excellent barista coffee.

We’ll head off in our private minivan to explore Phuket, starting with the Kata and Karon Viewpoint for stunning coastal views, then continue on to Phuket Old Town.

A Little Background- Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and one of the world’s top beach destinations — but there's so much more to it than surf, sand and nightlife and that’s what I will show you today.

Once a key stop on the trade route between India and China, Phuket became part of Thailand in the 1200s and later boomed due to tin mining, attracting European traders. The old town’s charming Sino-Portuguese architecture reflects that history beautifully.

Tourism took off in the 1970s. It’s now the island’s main industry, but traces of its colourful past remain in every street and shophouse.

Phuket Old Town Wander- we’ll stroll through narrow lanes lined with restored shophouses — a photographer’s dream with bright facades and quirky details. There’ll be time for a cool drink and a clean bathroom stop before lunch.

We’ll visit one of my favourite hidden gems for lunch — a family-run noodle shop I discovered while poking around the area one day. It’s casual, cluttered, and completely authentic. Locals love it, they, don't take bookings, we’re winging it!

Return to the resort mid-afternoon for free time — swim, nap, beach or relax as you wish.

As the sun begins to set, we’ll head to the pool for our private Welcome to Thailand dinner. Enjoy cocktails, sunset views, and a relaxed Thai banquet as the ‘Land of Smiles’ begins to work its magic. Wear something cool, casual and tropical — flip-flops fit right in!

Day 3 - Tak Baht, Thai Temples & Street Food

Something I like doing when I’m in Thailand is tak baht. Each morning, monks in their saffron robes walk barefoot through the local streets collecting food to be eaten at the temple.

Buddhists believe in ‘making merit’— the giving of food is one way to do this. Monks rely on food donations, and they must finish eating before noon. This discipline encourages mindfulness, simplicity and detachment from indulgence.

This morning I’ll be heading out to ‘tak baht’ and would love you to join me. I’ll guide you through the offering if you want to participate— or you can simply observe.

It’s a special experience that few visitors ever witness.

Temples - we’ll head off to see some of Phuket’s most beautiful temples. Our highlight is Wat Chalong, the island’s largest and most revered temple. Its 60m stupa houses a sacred fragment of Buddha’s bone and is adorned with stunning murals depicting his life. Climb to the terrace for sweeping views over the temple grounds.

A Taste of Southern Thailand - we’ll dive into Phuket’s vibrant food scene. Food tells you so much about a country. Thai food is very regional and the southern Thais like their food spicy. They will tell you the weather is hot just like their curries.

Starting at the main Phuket fresh food market you’ll experience the fantastic variety of food Phuket has to offer. Expect fresh local produce, fragrant spices and plenty of tastings!

We’ll return to the resort by late afternoon. Relax by the pool, head to the beach (a sun lounge is around 100 baht), enjoy a massage at the hotel or the beach, or simply unwind in the cool comfort of your room.

Tonight, we’ll eat at Sabai Jai, a favourite local spot whose name means ‘content heart’. We’ll sit outside, enjoy authentic Thai dishes, and maybe stroll to Karon’s main street afterward for ice cream curls, a little shopping, or a peek at the nightlife.

Day 4 - Meet the locals on Khoktanode Road & Picnic Thai style at the Naka Market

Take it slowly this morning — enjoy breakfast at your own pace. There’s no rush, as we won't head out until after midday. Sleep in, swim, read, have a massage, or stroll along the beach — it’s your time to relax.

Those who’ve read my book will be familiar with Pui, Kunya, Mickey, and Khun KK - all my friends from Khoktanode Road — my old neighbourhood. Today, you’ll get to meet them! I’m so excited to share my street with you and reconnect with some of the wonderful locals who made me feel so welcome and part of their community during my stay in 2023.

Khun KK will treat us to her iced Thai tea, iced coffee, and kanom krok (sweet coconut puddings). Mickey will tempt you with tropical fruit tastings — including the infamous durian! Kunya will cook lunch for us in her open-air restaurant, wok blazing and smile shining. You’re welcome to watch, chat, and ask questions as she works her magic.

Next, we’ll visit Naka Market, famous for its ‘genuine fakes’ and amazing local food. We’ll grab a table and picnic Thai style — collecting dishes from different stalls to share together. If you’re brave, this is your chance to try fried insects!

The market is a favourite among locals, full of authentic flavours and handmade goodies. When you’re ready to shop we’ll have Pui by our side, you’ll see how real Thai bartering is done —she’s a master negotiator!

Day 5 - Floating Breakfast & Your Holiday, Your Choice

Because breakfast is my favourite meal — and holidays should be memorable — we’ll start the day with a floating breakfast. Just pop on your cossie and meet at the pool. Your morning feast will be served in the pool in true Thai resort style.

Your Holiday, Your Choice - today is completely YOURS to enjoy however you wish. It’s your final full day in Phuket, so make it everything you want it to be.

Here are a few ideas for you:

Beach Bliss – Park yourself on a sun lounge at Karon, Kata, or Nai Harn Beach. Swim, read, nap, and maybe even enjoy some ice cream curls. There’s no rush, you’ve got all day.

Resort Pool Crawl - spend time at each of the 4 pools at the resort. The swim-up bars open at 12pm and you can eat your lunch poolside. Enjoy the relaxed vibe.

Cheeva Spa Indulgence*– Treat yourself to a massage, facial, or full spa treatment using your 20% off voucher. Add a mani-pedi for pure bliss.

Island Adventures*– Take a day trip to Koh Phi Phi, Maya Bay, or Koh Racha for incredible snorkelling, diving, and swimming in the warm turquoise waters.

Andamanda Water Park*– Not just for kids this water park is amazing. Combine fun and relaxation, rent a private cabana, float in the wave pool, or try a few thrilling rides.

YONA Floating Beach Club*– Experience beach club luxury on the water like you’ve never seen before. They have morning and afternoon packages available.

Shopping or Phuket Old Town Exploring – Visit Phuket’s massive shopping centres or wander through the Old Town again, discovering new cafes and street art.

Jetski Tour*- Ready for some island hopping on a jetski? A great day out on the water blasting along.

Ziplining with Flying Hanuman* - Fancy flying through the dense Phuket jungle, then this is for you. With 42 platforms you’ll have a ball.

*additional charge for this activity

Let’s get together tonight to share the adventures from your day. I’ve got an outside table for us at the Chom Restaurant at the hotel. They make some excellent Thai food but if you’re hankering for something other than Thai by now, they serve western food too.

For those that feel like it we can take a trip to the famous Bangla Road in Patong. It’s a place that has to be seen to be believed.

Day 6 - Farewell Phuket, now for some Phang Nga Magic

After breakfast, we’ll check out and jump into our private minivan for the scenic drive north. As we farewell Phuket you ’ll see the Thai countryside unfold — rubber, coconut, pineapple and durian plantations are abundant.

About 1.5 hours later, we’ll arrive at the pier and board a traditional long-tail boat. You’ll hear their unmistakable puttering motors as they whizz along the water — a sound that’s pure Thailand. It won’t take long before you see the towering limestone cliffs rise dramatically from the emerald sea — the natural beauty here is Thailand really showing off!

Our first stop is the iconic James Bond Island, made famous by The Man with the Golden Gun (1974). Yes, it’s a very very popular tourist spot — but it’s one of those ‘you just have to do it’ moments. Strike your best 007 pose and snap that classic shot! We’ll then head to the kayak pontoon, where a local paddler will guide you through hidden sun-lit lagoons and secret caves. All you have to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy the peace and beauty.

We’ll head back to the pier and then on to the Samet Nangshe Viewpoint, one of the most spectacular lookouts in the south. Perched high above the bay, the view is nothing short of magical. We’ll enjoy lunch at the luxurious Samet Nangshe Boutique Hotel, which overlooks the entire Phang Nga landscape.

If you’re feeling energetic, you can climb the 100 or so steps to the very top for an even more impressive view — or simply relax and take it all in from the terrace.

From here, it’s about an hour’s drive to Khao Lak, where we’ll check in at the beautiful Moracea Khao Lak Resort, the sister property of our Phuket hotel. Your bags will be waiting in your room. Take a dip in the pool, wander the beach, or unwind at happy hour — you’ve earned it.

We’ll meet later for sunset drinks  right here and depending on how everyone’s feeling, we’ll keep dinner casual with bar snacks or something a bit more substantial if you’re hungry.

Day 7 - Out and about in Khao Lak & Bedtime with Elephants

This morning you can wake up slowly and soak up the beauty of Moracea Khao Lak Resort. Being beachfront, peaceful, and little bit luxe it’s the kind of place you’ll wish you had more time to simply be. Don’t worry — today is perfectly balanced between gentle adventure and pure relaxation.

Mid-morning our first stop is the Tsunami Museum, a deeply moving place that honours the lives lost during the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004. You’ll no doubt remember the tragedy — a 9.1 magnitude earthquake off Sumatra sent waves crashing into this very coastline just hours later, forever changing the lives of those who called this paradise home. The museum is both informative and emotional, a tribute to resilience, rebuilding and remembrance.

Next, we’ll visit the Khao Lak Turtle Conservation Centre, where dedicated locals are working to rebuild the sea turtle population. Once hunted for food and their shells, turtles are now carefully protected and nurtured here. Seeing the tiny hatchlings up close is guaranteed to melt your heart —they’re impossibly cute, and it’s wonderful to know their future is being taken care of.

We’ll head back to the resort for some free time. You can have lunch where and when you please at the hotel. Have a swim, a nap, a massage, a beach walk or read your book — the choice is yours.

Ever wanted to put an Elephant to bed? This will be a truly unforgettable experience: Phang Nga Elephant Park’s “Bedtime with the Elephants”. There’s something very special about being close to these gentle giants. You’ll help prepare them for their evening rest — a moment of calm connection that’s hard to describe but deeply moving. For many, looking into an elephant’s eyes is something they never forget.

Thankfully, the old practices of riding elephants and making them perform tricks are fading away. The team here focuses on care, respect, and education — values close to my heart. We will help safely tuck the elephants into the jungle for the night and then stay on for a delicious dinner right at the elephant park, surrounded by the sounds of nature.

Day 8 - Cooking up a Thai storm

You might like to go light on breakfast this morning, as you’ll be cooking (and eating!) your own delicious Thai lunch. We’ll head off to Ning and Jokey’s home as this is where they run their cooking school from. They will take you for a stroll through their local fresh market. You’ll see how everyday Thai people shop for food — choosing vibrant herbs, colourful vegetables, and freshly made curry pastes.

Then it’s aprons on and woks at the ready! Under Ning and Jokey’s friendly guidance, you’ll create authentic Thai dishes bursting with flavour. The highlight? Making sticky rice with mango, the ultimate Thai dessert — and one that’s sure to impress if you make it when you’re back at home. Sit down together to enjoy the meal you’ve prepared. You might even start planning your Thai dinner party menu for your friends now you have delicious new dishes added to your repertoire.

Tonight, we’ll go into Khao Lak town to explore its small night market and have dinner at one of my favourites — Pam’s Restaurant. It’s relaxed, welcoming, and the food always flavoursome. If the mood takes us, we might wander a bit, find a quirky bar for a drink, or simply soak up the local atmosphere. No fixed plans for the night— just go with the flow and enjoy the moment.

Day 9 - Your Day, Your Way

Today is all about YOU — your pace, your preferences, your perfect day.

Choose how you’d like to spend your time. I’ve listed a few options below for inspiration.

Bliss Out – Stay by the beach or pool, order cocktails, and soak up every last bit of sunshine.

Baimai Spa* - Spend time in the hotel’s herbal steam room, followed by a body scrub and massage. Complete relaxation awaits you along with a 20% discount on treatments to enjoy.

Similan Islands*– visit one of the world’s top 10 dive sites. Snorkel, swim, and marvel at the coral reefs and crystal clear turquoise water.

Mangrove Kayaking Adventure*– Paddle through lush mangroves and spot local wildlife.

Khao Lak Local Snorkelling*– A relaxed day exploring nearby reefs and beaches.

Local Community Adventure*– Spend time in a local village and finish your day on a hidden beach. 1,000 baht from each person goes directly to the community.

Lampi Waterfall & Bamboo Rafting*– Swim beneath a jungle waterfall and float peacefully down the river on a bamboo raft.

Khao Sok jungle* - Enjoy time in the Khao Sok national park, welcomed by a local family you will forage for food, prepare a meal and finish with time on a hidden beach.

Cooking Class with Ning* – if one cooking class wasn’t enough you have time to do another.

*additional charge for this activity

Let’s make our last dinner together unforgettable! We have prime position on the beach reserved just for us. No shoes required — just your feet in the sand, a cocktail in hand, and a fabulous Thai feast for you to enjoy as the sun sets.

A beautiful way to celebrate new friendships and magical memories made.

Day 10 - And that's a wrap

After breakfast, we’ll check out and transfer back to Phuket Airport - approx. 1.5 hours, depending on traffic. Of course you can extend your stay in Khao Lak or Phuket or fly off to another destination in Asia from Phuket making the most of your precious holiday time.
